United Human Rights Statement

Honoring and affirming protections for human rights is consistent with our ideals and our mission. It is also embodied in our company culture and our core values – how we treat those who do business with our Bank has an important effect on our reputation, our image, and ultimately, on our success as a financial services provider. We base our actions on the golden rule of banking, “Treat others the way you would want to be treated.” When we extend service in this way, we are practicing the type of servant leadership and approachable demeanor in which we do business.

Just as service to customers is vital to the success of our Bank, teamwork is vital within our Bank. We work as a team and we support one another both personally and professionally. As employees on the United Community team, we respect one another as individuals, accept diversity of ideas, encourage innovation, display openness and trust in our relationships, and recognize quality achievements. As we display these values, we create the kind of teamwork necessary for our future. These values are at the root of our expectations for integrity and respect, as stated in United’s Code of Conduct.

United believes that protecting human rights is our social responsibility. Our support of fundamental rights is reflected in our policies and in our everyday interactions with teammates, vendors, customers, and the communities where we do business. We strive to conduct our business in a manner that is consistent with fundamental human rights principles. We do not tolerate corruption, harassment, forced or child labor, modern slavery, or human trafficking in any form. We respect and are guided by the standards of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

We are committed to maintaining a work environment where every employee at every level is treated with dignity and respect, free from discrimination and harassment, and can devote their full attention and best efforts to the job. These same standards apply to our interactions with customers and others with whom we do business, including vendors and contractors. United expects that the entities with which we do business similarly respect individual human rights and conduct their business operations free from human rights abuses.

These are some of the efforts United makes to ensure we are honoring our commitment to human rights:

  • Our commitment to ethical business practices is embodied in our Code of Conduct. United requires associates to complete Code of Conduct training upon hire and annually thereafter and to certify upon completing each training session that they have read and understand the Code of Conduct.
  • United expects that the entities with which we do business respect human rights and conduct their businesses free from corruption, harassment, forced or child labor, modern slavery, or human trafficking in any form.
  • United respects the right of our people to freedom of association, and recognizes the rights of our people to bargain collectively in accordance with applicable laws in the states in which we operate.
  • United conducts business in accordance with all applicable labor, safety, health, anti-discrimination, and other workplace laws.
  • United offers equal employment opportunity and advancement to all individuals. We are committed to providing a work environment that is free of harassment, discrimination, or retaliation. As a result, we maintain a strict policy prohibiting discrimination, harassment, or retaliation of or against our job applicants, contractors, interns, volunteers, or employees by another employee, supervisor, vendor, customer, or any third party on the basis of actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, age, sex or gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, related medical conditions, and lactation), gender identity or gender expression (including transgender status), sexual orientation, marital status, military service and veteran status, disability, protected medical condition as defined by applicable state or local law, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws and ordinances.
  • We pride ourselves on workplaces where employees feel inspired to voice their ideas and openly express opinions for the betterment of the Bank, our employees and our customers. At United, we desire all members of our company to feel they are operating in an inclusive environment that welcomes and supports differences.
  • United enables employees to advance their skills, excel in their careers, and achieve their goals. This includes assisting all employees with navigating corporate culture, building workplace relationships, and creating opportunities to discuss career and professional development.
  • United encourages employees to raise concerns, ask questions, and report potential policy violations or suspicious behaviors without fear of retaliation.
  • United provides access to a confidential 24-hour Ethicspoint website and toll-free telephone number.

United is committed to engaging our stakeholders – including our employees, customers, vendors, and the communities that we serve - clearly, honestly and respectfully to understand current and emerging trends that may affect the Bank’s business operations. We strive to identify potential environmental, social, governance, cultural, and business risks and to work collaboratively those risks through programs, policies, and other strategies.

Within our risk function, a team is responsible for reviewing, implementing and managing potential risks that our activities pose on human rights. We also have created a team that is responsible reviewing, implementing, and managing our reputational risk policies. Those teams monitor both achievements and risks associated with our environmental impact, social responsibility, and community reinvestment associated with the communities that we serve. Our Corporate Impact page provides additional information about our commitment to the people and communities that we support.
